What is the role of push-fit joints between pipes?
Scientific research into water mains often focuses on the water mains themselves, rather than on the joints connecting them. In contrast, in his dissertation at TU Delft, based on his work at KWR, André Marques Arsénio focuses on the joints.
The research resulted in a four-step procedure to predict failure in PVC push-fit joints. Based on this procedure, water companies can determine the remaining lifetime of the joints in their networks. This requires that the pipes be inspected several times over the course of their lifetime. Once their condition falls below a certain threshold, the pipes and joints can be replaced.
Symposium and follow-up research
After Arsénio’s defence of his thesis, a symposium on “Asset management: challenges and opportunities” takes place, with speakers from the Netherlands, Norway and Canada. The research into joints is being continued within the water sector’s joint research programme (BTO), under the Asset management theme.
